Ontario students regularly post that OSAP did not cover their expected costs, rent was higher than a university estimate, or work hours conflicted with school. These accounts are anecdotal, but the repeated planning lesson is real: never build a budget from tuition alone or assume assessed aid will fill the difference.

Examples of student discussions include “How am I supposed to pay for school?”, OSAP funding not being enough, and self-reported annual costs. They are not representative surveys and the numbers should not be copied into a family budget.

The useful warnings

  • aid estimates can differ from final assessments
  • housing and food vary widely by city and arrangement
  • deposits may be due before funding arrives
  • work income can fall during heavy academic periods
  • students underestimate personal, transport, equipment, and travel costs
  • emergency and institutional aid often require a separate application

What the posts cannot tell you

A stranger’s OSAP amount does not reveal their household information, course load, status, disability-related assessment, program, study period, or documents. Another student’s rent may include utilities, roommates, furniture, or a different lease length. Compare structure, not raw totals.

Turn the concern into a plan

Use the official estimator, the exact program fee page, actual housing options, and a conservative work estimate. Ask the institution about bursaries and payment timing. Keep grants, savings, income, family support, and loans separate. Stress-test a 10–15% cost increase.

Does OSAP promise to cover every school and living cost?

No. OSAP assesses eligible aid under current rules; it is not a guarantee that every individual budget will be fully funded.

Are Reddit cost totals fake?

Some may be honest, but they are self-selected and defined inconsistently. Use them to discover missing budget categories, not to predict your bill.

Should I use a student line of credit if OSAP is short?

Only after checking assessment errors, aid reviews, institutional funding, cost changes, and the full credit contract. Private borrowing has different repayment and protection rules.
