Financial-aid assessments are individual. Use this page to organize questions, then use the official portal and the institution’s financial-aid office.
What is OSAP?
The Ontario Student Assistance Program provides eligible students with assessed grants and/or loans for approved postsecondary study under current rules.
Is an OSAP estimate guaranteed?
No. The estimator uses entered assumptions. The application, documents, income verification, program, course load, and enrollment confirmation can change the assessment.
Did Ontario change the grant-and-loan mix for 2026–27?
Yes. Ontario says that, for programs starting on or after August 1, 2026, students will receive more of the provincial OSAP portion as loans rather than grants. The effect is assessment-specific, so compare the current estimator with the final grant/loan breakdown instead of applying a generic percentage.
When should I apply for OSAP?
Apply early enough to complete documents and resolve issues. Outside deadlines exist relative to the study-period end, but they are not sensible target dates. Use the exact deadline shown for the application.
Does OSAP cover all tuition and living costs?
Not necessarily. Build the entire budget and plan for any remaining gap.
Are OSAP grants free money?
Grants generally do not require repayment when eligibility and conditions remain satisfied, but reassessment or changes can convert amounts. Report changes and read notices.
Can I decline the loan and keep the grant?
OSAP provides current options and procedures for funding components. Follow the portal instructions or ask financial aid about the specific assessment.
What happens to OSAP if I drop a course?
Course-load or enrollment changes can affect eligibility, funding, grants, academic progress, and repayment status. Ask financial aid before the change when possible.
Do scholarships affect OSAP?
Awards and other resources may need to be reported and can affect assessment. Follow the current application instructions.
Can RESP money pay for rent and books?
Federal guidance permits qualifying postsecondary educational-assistance use beyond tuition, subject to RESP and promoter rules. Keep enrollment evidence and ask the promoter before withdrawal.
What if my family did not contribute to an RESP?
Check whether the beneficiary is eligible for the Canada Learning Bond, which can provide benefits without personal contributions, and explore OSAP, institutional bursaries, grants, work, and a cost plan.
Should I work during university?
Work can help finances and experience, but budget conservatively and protect academic progress. Check any scholarship, aid, or immigration rules that apply.
