Ontario math codes are compact maps.
- The first three letters identify the course family.
- The fourth character identifies the grade: 1 is Grade 9, 2 is Grade 10, 3 is Grade 11, and 4 is Grade 12.
- The fifth character identifies the pathway or type: for example W for de-streamed, D for academic, P for applied, U for university, M for university/college, C for college, E for workplace, and L for locally developed.
Schools can add a local sixth character. Use the first five to identify the provincial course.
Current mainstream pathway map
Grade 9
- MTH1W — Mathematics, de-streamed
Grade 10
- MPM2D — Principles of Mathematics, academic
- MFM2P — Foundations of Mathematics, applied
- MAT2L — locally developed mathematics, where offered and appropriate
Grade 11
- MCR3U — Functions, university
- MCF3M — Functions and Applications, university/college
- MBF3C — Foundations for College Mathematics
- MEL3E — Mathematics for Work and Everyday Life
Grade 12
- MHF4U — Advanced Functions
- MCV4U — Calculus and Vectors
- MDM4U — Mathematics of Data Management
- MCT4C — Mathematics for College Technology
- MAP4C — Foundations for College Mathematics
- MEL4E — Mathematics for Work and Everyday Life

Plan backward from the destination
Do not ask only, “Which math can I pass?” Ask:
- Which programs might I want?
- Which exact Grade 12 math codes do they require or recommend?
- What Grade 11 prerequisites lead there?
- Which Grade 10 choice keeps that route open?
- What support would make the academically appropriate route manageable?
For example, many science, computing, business, and engineering programs require or value different combinations of MHF4U, MCV4U, and MDM4U. The program page—not a general chart—decides.
Academic versus applied is not a ranking of people
Pathway labels describe course design and destinations. A student’s placement should consider goals, achievement, learning needs, readiness, and available support. Moving between pathways may require prerequisites, transfer work, or upgrading.
Avoid choosing a course only because friends take it or because one label sounds more prestigious.
Older codes still appear online
MPM1D and MFM1P were older Grade 9 academic and applied courses. Ontario’s current Grade 9 course is MTH1W. Old notes and parent memories can therefore conflict with a current timetable.
Locally developed codes and availability can vary by board. Ask guidance for the current calendar.
Questions for course selection night
- Which Grade 12 courses are prerequisites for my possible programs?
- What is the prerequisite chain from my current course?
- If I change direction next year, what upgrading or transfer options exist?
- Which math support is available during the course?
- Is the course offered every semester, online, in summer, or at night?
- How will an IEP or accommodation plan operate in this course?
Is MTH2W the Grade 10 course?
No. MTH1W is the current de-streamed Grade 9 mathematics code. Ontario Grade 10 continues to use courses including MPM2D and MFM2P. Always verify the current board calendar.
Do I need calculus for every university program?
No. Requirements vary. Some programs require MCV4U, some require another Grade 12 math, and some do not require Grade 12 math at all. Check each program.
Can I move from MFM2P to MCR3U?
Prerequisite rules and possible transfer routes matter. MCR3U normally requires MPM2D. Speak with guidance about the approved path rather than assuming direct entry.
