Ontario High School Course Selection: The Grade 8–12 Master Guide

A work-backward system for choosing Ontario high school courses without blindly taking the hardest option, closing an important prerequisite, or trusting an outdated course-code myth.

Course selection feels permanent because one box can affect the next prerequisite. It is important, but it is usually a sequence of revisable decisions, not one irreversible verdict on a student’s future.

The four documents to put beside each other

Do not plan from memory. Open these at the same time:

  1. The student’s current credit summary or graduation tracker from the school.
  2. The school or board’s current course calendar, including prerequisites and where a course is offered.
  3. Live program requirements in OUInfo, Ontario Colleges, or the relevant apprenticeship and training source.
  4. The student’s current marks, learning needs, workload, interests, commute, activities, and honest experience in prerequisite subjects.

The first two show what the school can schedule. The third prevents accidental doors from closing. The fourth keeps the plan human.

Start with three possible futures, not one perfect career

A Grade 9 or 10 student does not need a lifelong job title. Ask for three broad possibilities:

  • one route the student is currently excited about;
  • one adjacent route with different prerequisites;
  • one practical backup that the student could respect rather than treat as failure.

For each route, find two or three real programs. Record the required Grade 12 courses. Then trace each Grade 12 prerequisite backward through Grade 11 and Grade 10.

Families often overbuild a timetable because a course “sounds useful.” Label every choice:

  • Graduation requirement: needed for the student’s OSSD cohort.
  • Program prerequisite: the destination says it must be completed.
  • Preparation: not required, but likely useful for the first-year curriculum.
  • Exploration: chosen to test an interest or build a skill.
  • Personal: arts, physical activity, language, technology, community, or another meaningful part of school.

Protect the first two. Debate the others based on capacity and goals.

Should the student take the harder pathway?

Use four tests.

  1. Need: Does a plausible destination require the course or its successor?
  2. Readiness: Does current work show enough prerequisite understanding—not just one inflated or depressed mark?
  3. Support: Are teacher help, tutoring, accommodations, time, and study habits available?
  4. Cost: Would this choice crowd out sleep, health, another prerequisite, or the chance to learn deeply?

A more demanding pathway can preserve options. But a course that is not required, creates chronic overload, and damages learning may have little option value. Conversely, avoiding every difficult prerequisite can quietly close routes. The right answer is evidence-based, not status-based.

Know the 2026–27 mark structure before choosing workload

Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, Ontario’s published update changes secondary final-mark composition. Grades 9–10 use 65% classroom work, 20% mandatory final evaluation, and 15% attendance/participation; Grades 11–12 use 65%, 25%, and 10%. Mathematics uses a written exam for the final-evaluation portion—20% in Grades 9–10 and 25% in Grades 11–12—with listed course exemptions and special handling for MTH1W’s EQAO assessment.

This should inform workload and support planning, not become a reason to avoid a needed course. Verify the live policy, school implementation, exemption status, accommodation plan, and what counts as an excused absence.

A grade-by-grade planning rhythm

Grade 8 into Grade 9

Confirm the current Grade 9 course package, supports, French-language choices where applicable, elective options, and any transition plan or IEP handoff. The goal is a stable start and a timetable the student understands.

Grade 9 into Grade 10

Review which courses lead toward later university, university/college, college, workplace, open, or locally developed options. Look for gaps in literacy and numeracy early enough to repair them.

Grade 10 into Grade 11

This is the first major prerequisite-planning window. Research several postsecondary program families. Check science, English, mathematics, arts, portfolio, and other requirements. Do not assume all business, health, computer science, engineering, or college programs ask for the same courses.

Grade 11 into Grade 12

Make a program-by-program prerequisite table. Required Grade 12 courses often become part of an admission average, but the method varies. Leave enough courses for graduation and a viable schedule even if one class is cancelled or goes badly.

The timetable stress test

Before submitting selections, ask:

  • Are all OSSD requirements covered for this student’s cohort?
  • Does every required Grade 12 course have its prerequisite?
  • Are two high-risk courses landing in the same semester?
  • Is there a backup if a course is full, cancelled, or conflicts?
  • Does the student need a spare, or would another credit/support period be safer?
  • Are online, night, summer, private, or dual-credit options being considered for a clear reason?
  • Has an admissions office been asked about any unusual course route that could matter?
  • Does an IEP, ESL/ELD plan, medical need, athletics, work, caregiving, or transportation change what is realistic?

What to ask guidance

Bring a proposed plan instead of asking “What should I take?” Ask:

  • “Can you show us the prerequisite chain for these choices?”
  • “Which selections are requests rather than guaranteed placements?”
  • “What happens if this course is cancelled or conflicts?”
  • “Which graduation requirements are still incomplete?”
  • “What board-approved alternatives exist, and how will they appear on the transcript?”
  • “What is the deadline to change a selection?”
  • “Who should confirm a university- or college-specific interpretation?”

Guidance counsellors can explain the school system and help build a feasible timetable. The institution decides its own admission policy.

If the plan changes

Changing direction may require a prerequisite, transfer course, upgrading, summer/night school, adult education, college pathway, or a later postsecondary transfer. “Possible” does not mean automatic or cost-free, but it also does not mean the student is trapped.

Make the gap explicit:

  1. Name the new destination.
  2. List missing requirements.
  3. Ask the school which bridge is officially available.
  4. Ask the destination institution whether it will accept that bridge.
  5. Compare time, cost, workload, and risk in writing.

Final course-selection checklist

Is it always better to start in the harder course and downgrade later?

No. Starting higher may preserve a prerequisite chain when the student is reasonably ready and supported. But changes can disrupt a timetable, and unnecessary overload can reduce learning and wellbeing. Check the actual destination requirements, readiness, support, and change rules.

Can a student change from a college pathway to a university pathway later?

Often there are bridges, prerequisite courses, upgrading, or alternate postsecondary routes, but the exact sequence is course-, board-, and institution-specific. Ask for the missing prerequisite chain in writing rather than relying on “you can always switch.”
