Research & practical

Official facts, research, and community experience do different jobs here. Rules and deadlines can change; consequential details should be re-checked through the live primary links.

Online tutoring is not automatically a lecture through a webcam. The checklist below offers practical signals to inspect, not a validated checklist for predicting results.

Before the session

The tutor should know the course code, current unit, immediate concern, and whether the goal is concept repair, homework coaching, test preparation, or enrichment. The student should send or open permitted materials without exposing other students’ information.

During the session

Look for:

  • a shared whiteboard or clear written mathematics
  • the student writing, typing, or explaining—not only watching
  • notation rendered clearly, especially fractions, exponents, radicals, and functions
  • questions that diagnose the first incorrect step
  • short examples followed by independent attempts
  • screen-sharing used carefully rather than taking control of the work
  • a summary of the method and next practice

Technical setup

Test whether the student can see and produce notation while hearing the tutor clearly. Use whichever charged device, paper, calculator, accessibility tools, and uploaded materials make that possible, and test links before a high-stakes session.

Homework ethics

The tutor can explain, question, model a related example, and check reasoning. The student should own submitted work. If an assessment prohibits help, the tutor should respect that boundary.

Is online tutoring effective for every student?

No single format fits everyone. It works best when the student can engage with the tools and environment. Some learners need in-person structure, accessibility changes, or a hybrid plan.

Should online tutoring sessions be recorded?

Only with clear consent, purpose, secure handling, and privacy rules. Written session notes or a practice plan may be enough. Ask how any recording is stored and deleted.

Can a phone work for online math tutoring?

It may work if the student can see and produce notation, hear clearly, and move between the shared workspace and course materials. Test those functions before deciding that any device size is sufficient or necessary.

Evidence and limits

  • A randomized evaluation of an intensive online mathematics tutoring program reported positive results for the specific two-student, teacher-led model it tested: Gortazar, Hupkau and Roldán-Monés.
  • This result applies to that intensive eight-week, two-student, mostly qualified-teacher model; it does not establish that every online tutoring service is effective. Delivery mode alone is not a guarantee.
  • A 2024 tutoring meta-analysis found positive average effects across programs while emphasizing variation by design and context. Stanford’s Tutoring Quality Standards provides practical implementation criteria.
  • A randomized pilot of online tutoring by college volunteers estimated small positive but statistically insignificant effects, illustrating that delivery format alone does not guarantee impact: Kraft, List, Livingston and Sadoff.
  • Math101 sells online tutoring. Use the trial questions above, compare alternatives, and require independent evidence of progress rather than relying on this site’s marketing.
