Parents & Tutoring

My Teen Is Struggling With Math: A Calm Parent Plan

How parents can identify the actual gap, communicate without shame, work with the school, evaluate tutoring, support routines, and respond to a failing mark.

Research & practical

Official facts, research, and community experience do different jobs here. Rules and deadlines can change; consequential details should be re-checked through the live primary links.

“Try harder” is not a diagnosis. A falling mark is a signal to investigate possible contributors such as missing prerequisites, attendance, language, anxiety, executive functioning, unclear instruction, health, an overloaded timetable, or a study method that produces recognition instead of recall.

Start with one low-pressure conversation

Ask:

  • Which topic was the first one that stopped making sense?
  • Can you show me a recent question—not only the mark?
  • Is the problem understanding, starting, finishing, time, or tests?
  • What help have you already tried?
  • What would make the next week feel 10% more manageable?

Avoid comparisons with siblings, your own schooling, or another student’s grade. The goal is to learn what is blocked, not to assign shame.

Collect evidence

Look at returned assessments, incomplete work, attendance, online portal notes, and the course outline. Ask the teacher for the priority gap and current recovery options. If an IEP or accommodations apply, check whether they are understood and used effectively.

Run a two-week repair sprint

  1. Choose one prerequisite gap and one current topic.
  2. Schedule four short practice blocks.
  3. Use worked examples, then remove support.
  4. Check with mixed questions.
  5. Record errors by type.
  6. Meet the teacher/tutor with the attempted work.

Success is not “we argued for two hours at the kitchen table.” It is evidence that the student can solve a little more independently.

When tutoring may help

Tutoring programs show positive average effects across many experiments, but results vary by design and context. A tutor may help diagnose gaps, explain differently, provide deliberate practice, and create accountability. Test this by asking how the tutor assesses understanding, follows the Ontario course, handles homework, communicates progress, and avoids dependency. A student should gradually do more—not become unable to work without the tutor.

Kamran’s tutoring is connected to Math101’s complete lessons, course maps, practice, and printable review, so the student can revisit the work between sessions. See tutoring with Kamran.

Should I remove all activities until the mark improves?

Do not remove every activity by default. Identify which commitments create overload and which support rest, exercise, belonging, or treatment.

What if my teenager refuses tutoring?

Ask what they fear or dislike about it and offer a trial with clear goals. Include them in choosing the format and decide in advance how progress will be evaluated.

Is one failed math test an emergency?

It is a signal to analyze, not proof of failure. Check the weight, error pattern, current average, remaining assessments, and support plan.
