Every newcomer case is individual. Bring records, ask for interpretation support, and request written explanations of placement and graduation planning.

What documents should we bring to an Ontario high school?

Bring identification, proof of address/status documents requested by the board, official transcripts/report cards, course descriptions, exam results, translations, and learning-support records where available. Ask the board for its exact list.

Who decides my child’s grade placement?

The school applies Ontario and board procedures using age, previous education, records, assessment, and individual circumstances. Ask how the decision was made.

Will foreign high-school credits count?

The school assesses prior learning for equivalency and remaining OSSD requirements. The result is not a simple one-to-one renaming of every course.

What is the difference between ESL and ELD?

Ontario policy describes ESL for English-language learners with age-appropriate first-language literacy/educational backgrounds and ELD for students whose prior schooling/literacy development has been limited or interrupted. Assessment determines support.

Does ESL mean a student is weak academically?

No. English proficiency and subject understanding are different. Placement and support should recognize both.

Can a newcomer graduate on time?

Possibly, depending on recognized credits, remaining requirements, prerequisites, language development, course availability, and workload. Ask for earliest and sustainable plans.

Can my child receive an IEP?

Newcomer status alone is not a disability, but multilingual students can also have learning needs. Schools should use appropriate assessment and avoid confusing language acquisition with disability—or overlooking disability because of language.

Can a newcomer apply to Ontario university?

Yes, if the applicant meets the institution’s current academic, document, language, status, and program requirements. Admission is separate from high-school placement.

Are permanent residents international students for tuition?

Fee classification depends on institutional rules and documentation. Ask the institution’s registrar/fees office for the exact status and deadline.

Can newcomers receive OSAP?

Ontario lists Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and protected persons among status requirements, plus Ontario residency and other eligibility rules. Verify the individual case through official OSAP guidance.

What if records were lost during displacement?

Tell the school why records are unavailable and ask which alternative evidence or assessment procedures can be used. Do not fabricate documents.
