The honest answer is: the course required by the exact program, campus, and entry year. “Business needs data” or “science needs calculus” is too vague to plan a timetable.
The common senior courses
- MHF4U — Advanced Functions: common for engineering, computer science, mathematics, physical science, economics, and many business programs.
- MCV4U — Calculus and Vectors: common for engineering and many mathematics/science/computing routes. MHF4U is normally taken before or concurrently as permitted by the prerequisite structure.
- MDM4U — Mathematics of Data Management: valuable for probability and statistics and accepted by some programs, but it does not substitute for MHF4U or MCV4U when those are explicitly required.
- MCT4C — Mathematics for College Technology: designed for relevant college technology pathways.
- MAP4C — Foundations for College Mathematics: supports many college pathways; program requirements vary.
- MEL4E — Mathematics for Work and Everyday Life: workplace preparation and daily numeracy; it is not a university-preparation math course.
Work backward, not from rumours
- Choose at least three possible programs.
- Open each official admissions page for the correct campus and year.
- Record every prerequisite and minimum.
- Check the Grade 11 prerequisite route into the Grade 12 course.
- Build a backup program whose requirements are also understood.
A student considering engineering and business may choose MHF4U and MCV4U and investigate whether MDM4U adds useful statistics. A student targeting a college health program may need a different math and science combination. More courses are not automatically better if overload lowers learning and final results.
If you are missing the prerequisite
Talk with guidance about timetable changes, night or summer school, continuing education, adult learning, or another approved route. Then check how the target institution treats timing and repeats. Do not assume a waiver or transfer plan.
Is MDM4U easier than MHF4U?
They emphasize different mathematics. Individual difficulty depends on strengths and teaching context. Choose based on program requirements and useful preparation, not only an “easy average” rumour.
Can MDM4U replace Calculus and Vectors?
