There is no single “best career in Ontario.” A list that ranks surgeon, electrician, software developer, teacher, and accountant on one scale is hiding the decision: best for what, where, after how much training, and for whom?
A useful answer ranks exact options on explicit axes, then checks the training gate and the ordinary work.
What the strongest current national evidence actually says
Canada’s Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS) 2024–2033 summary projects about 8.1 million job openings over the decade. About 2.6 million are expansion demand and about 5.5 million are replacement demand, mainly retirements; replacement represents 68.1% of projected openings. Three-quarters of openings are in occupations that usually require postsecondary education or management experience.
COPS identifies more than 100 occupations at moderate or strong national shortage risk, concentrated in health; natural and applied sciences; and parts of construction and transportation. Examples include several nursing and allied-health occupations, selected engineering occupations, cybersecurity specialists, electricians, plumbers, millwrights, refrigeration mechanics, construction managers, teachers, social workers, and early-childhood educators.
That is useful—but not a promise:
- COPS is national, while a student may need work in Mississauga, Thunder Bay, Windsor, Ottawa, or a small community.
- An occupation is not the same as a degree. Many degrees feed several occupations; many occupations accept several credentials.
- A shortage can coexist with hard licensing, difficult schedules, rural vacancies, poor retention, or too few entry-level positions in one city.
- A ten-year projection is a model built on assumptions, not a guaranteed personal outcome.
- COPS itself notes that its demographic assumptions were produced when immigration targets differed from later announcements.
Use COPS to identify possibilities. Use Canada Job Bank trend analysis to inspect Ontario and regional wages, outlooks, requirements, and job-market information for the exact National Occupational Classification (NOC) occupation.
Five numbers people confuse

When someone says a field is “booming,” ask which number, geography, date, and denominator they mean.
“Best” by explicit axis
The following are decision hypotheses, not universal rankings.
Clearest occupation at graduation
Profession-facing programs such as nursing, medical laboratory science, medical radiation technology, respiratory therapy, diagnostic medical sonography, engineering technology, and some college diplomas can connect education more directly to a named occupation than a broad bachelor’s degree.
Trade-off: approval/accreditation, clinical placements, examinations, registration, geographic availability, and fixed timetables become real gates. Check the exact program in the appropriate regulator or accreditor directory before paying a deposit.
Earn while learning
Apprenticeships in trades such as electrician, plumber, millwright, refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic, and others combine workplace training with in-class components. Skilled Trades Ontario is the official starting point for Ontario’s apprenticeship pathway.
Trade-off: finding and maintaining an apprenticeship sponsor or training agreement can be the bottleneck; work may be physical, weather-exposed, cyclical, location-dependent, or safety-critical. “Shortage” does not mean an employer must take an inexperienced apprentice.
Strongest fit for direct human service
Nursing, teaching, social work, early childhood education, counselling-related paths, and allied health can provide visible social purpose. Several appear in current COPS shortage-risk groups.
Trade-off: emotional labour, documentation, shift work, caseload, public funding, licensing, and burnout risk matter as much as demand. Talk to people about an ordinary difficult week, not only mission and meaning.
Strongest fit for physical systems and infrastructure
Civil, electrical, mechanical, industrial, and other engineering or engineering-technology routes can connect to infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, transportation, construction, and systems. Several engineering occupations appear in current COPS shortage-risk results.
Trade-off: branch and region matter; an engineering degree and an engineering-technology diploma are different routes; professional engineering has an accredited-degree/licensure pathway; industries can be cyclical.
Strongest fit for digital systems
Cybersecurity, software, data, cloud, business systems, and IT operations remain important career families. COPS currently lists cybersecurity specialists at shortage risk nationally, but that does not make every computing occupation or new graduate market identical.
Trade-off: entry-level competition, rapid skill change, project evidence, security responsibility, and AI-assisted task change. A generic “tech” forecast is not a substitute for the exact NOC, region, and role.
Broadest generalist routes
Business, mathematics, economics, communications, social sciences, humanities, and general science can lead to many occupations.
Trade-off: flexibility shifts more career construction onto the student. Co-op, a technical or research method, a portfolio, relationships, and specific work evidence can matter more because the degree title does not name a job.

The nine-axis career scorecard
Weight each axis from 0 (irrelevant) to 5 (essential). Score each occupation in a region, not an academic field in Canada, from 1 to 5. Attach a source or interview note to every score.

Then add three flags that no weighted total can erase:
- fatal constraint: a health, disability, financial, family, geographic, or values issue that makes the route unsafe or unacceptable;
- single point of failure: one later admission, sponsor, exam, or licence on which the whole plan depends;
- evidence weakness: a high score based mainly on marketing, a tiny survey, or anecdotes.
A worked comparison—without pretending the scores are universal
Suppose a student is comparing registered nursing, electrical apprenticeship, cybersecurity, and accounting. The correct output is not one winner. It may look like:
- Nursing ranks strongly for a defined credential and current national shortage evidence, but poorly for this student’s tolerance of rotating shifts and bodily care.
- Electrical apprenticeship ranks strongly for earning during training and hands-on work, but sponsor access and construction geography are unresolved.
- Cybersecurity matches the student’s systems interest and has favourable national shortage evidence, but the entry-level portfolio and experience path is weak.
- Accounting offers a legible professional route and broad employer base, but the student has not tested reporting/control work and CPA Ontario says its new professional program launches in January 2027.
The next action is four small experiments, not a debate about prestige.
Decision experiments that cost less than the wrong program
1. Build an evidence sheet
For each occupation record:
- exact NOC title/code;
- Ontario and two local Job Bank outlooks;
- low/median/high local wages and date;
- normal requirements;
- route length and all major fees;
- regulator/accreditor link;
- two current entry-level postings and the experience they request;
- one practitioner interview;
- one “why people leave” hypothesis to test.
2. Run a work-sample weekend
Use a safe, beginner-appropriate approximation:
- health: document and communicate a simulated care scenario;
- trade: attend an official hands-on event or supervised shop exposure—never imitate hazardous work alone;
- technology: diagnose and document a small system problem;
- accounting: reconcile a simple ledger and explain an inconsistency;
- policy/research: analyze a public dataset and write a one-page evidence note;
- education: design, teach, and revise a 15-minute lesson.
Notice whether frustration produces curiosity or avoidance.
3. Interview for disconfirmation
Ask two practitioners:
- What does a normal Tuesday contain?
- Which task occupies more time than outsiders expect?
- How did you get the first relevant job?
- What makes people leave?
- Which credential or licence is actually required?
- How have tools and AI changed junior work?
- What would you choose if you had my constraints?
Their answers are anecdotes—valuable for discovering questions, not proving labour-market claims.
4. Price the downside
Calculate the cost of one extra year, a failed licensing exam, relocation, unpaid placement, tools, commuting, and a six-month job search. A route can still be worthwhile; it should not depend on everything going perfectly.
How to read salary claims
Use an hourly equivalent when schedules differ. A CAD 90,000 salary at 50 hours per week is different from CAD 80,000 at 37.5 hours with a pension. Include overtime, benefits, union dues, professional fees, equipment, unpaid preparation, contract gaps, commuting, and self-employment expenses.
Starting pay and median pay answer different questions. The Job Bank median includes established workers. Ask what a realistic new entrant earns and how long progression typically takes. Do not compare a senior specialist salary with a new graduate’s expected pay.
Licensure, accreditation, and graduate-school bottlenecks
Before enrolling, classify the target career:
- regulated occupation: a provincial law/regulator governs registration and/or title; use the regulator first;
- certified/credential-valued occupation: a certification may matter but is not identical to legal registration;
- accredited-program route: program accreditation is a gateway or strong signal; verify exact campus/program/year;
- graduate-entry profession: the bachelor’s degree is preparation for another competitive program, not the final qualification;
- unregulated occupation: employers set requirements, so evidence and experience may matter more than a single prescribed credential.
Never accept “this degree leads to…” without drawing every gate between admission and independent practice.
What AI changes in career choice
Do not search for an “AI-proof” title. Separate tasks:
- routine drafting, classification, first-pass code, search, and documentation may become faster or require fewer junior hours;
- verification, system design, privacy, security, physical intervention, relationship work, negotiation, and accountable judgment remain consequential;
- lower AI exposure does not equal lower automation exposure. Statistics Canada’s 2026 study of journeypersons explicitly distinguishes cognitive AI exposure from automation, which can affect physical/routine tasks differently.
The safer capability stack is domain knowledge + data/digital literacy + tool evaluation + communication + responsibility. Recheck the occupation as tools change.
Which careers pay the most in Ontario?
Job Bank can compare occupation- and region-specific wages, but high observed pay often comes after long training, licensing, unusual responsibility, seniority, risk, difficult conditions, or selection. Compare starting pay, hours, net training cost, and completion probability—not only the high wage.
Is a labour shortage guaranteed to last until I graduate?
No. Projections change with policy, technology, training supply, migration, funding, and the economy. Build transferable skills and recheck local evidence each year.
Should I choose university because it keeps more doors open?
Not automatically. A broad university degree may preserve academic flexibility but leave the first occupation less defined. A college or apprenticeship route may connect more directly to work but specialize earlier. Compare actual transfer/bridge routes and total cost.
What if I cannot move for work?
Treat geography as a major weight, not a footnote. Use Job Bank regional outlooks and postings, identify local employers and training placements, and avoid using national demand to assume a local job exists.
