First fix the unit of comparison
Bad comparison: “Waterloo versus Toronto versus York.”
Useful comparison: “These three exact computer science entry streams, at these campuses, for a student with this budget, commute, learning style, interests, and career uncertainty.”
A university can contain direct-entry programs, broad first-year gateways, competitive specializations, affiliates, multiple campuses, co-op and regular streams, and professional programs. The name alone hides those differences.
The twelve-row matrix
1. Exact entry
Record credential, faculty, campus, OUAC code, co-op/regular designation, entry year, and whether the applicant enters the specialization directly.
2. Admission
Record prerequisites, course minimums, estimated range, supplementary assessment, repeated-course policy, alternate offers, and applicant-category rules.
3. First-year curriculum
List required courses and elective room. Compare actual calendars, not promotional themes.
4. Progression
Ask what GPA, course grades, credit load, application, ranking, or capacity limits control movement into second year, a major, co-op, clinical placement, or honours stream.
5. Flexibility
Can the student change major, add a minor, transfer faculties, take courses across affiliates, or leave co-op? What prerequisites, capacity limits, time, and fees apply?
6. Work-integrated learning
Record whether co-op, internship, practicum, clinical placement, field education, or project work is required or optional; how students become eligible; who finds placements; and what fees apply.
7. Accreditation and licensing
For a regulated profession, verify the program with the accreditor or regulator. A university’s general prestige cannot substitute for required recognition.
8. Whole cost
Include tuition, ancillary and program fees, equipment, software, transport, housing, food, work-term moves, unpaid placements, and lost work time. Model more than first year.
9. Daily life
Calculate door-to-door commute, earliest classes, late labs, winter travel, food, study space, residence, and where the student will build community.
10. Learning and accessibility support
Check academic advising, accessibility, counselling, tutoring or learning services, career support, Indigenous/student identity services, and how accommodations work in labs, placements, co-op, or professional requirements.
11. Published outcomes and scale
Ontario’s Common University Data Ontario can provide institution-level data such as enrolment, class-size information, fees, and selected outcomes. HEQCO provides system context. Read definitions and cohort dates; an institution-wide indicator may not describe one program.
12. Student experience
Ask several current students specific questions. Separate direct observation from hearsay. Look for patterns across different people and contexts.
How to use CUDO without creating false precision
Common University Data Ontario (CUDO) is useful because participating universities report data in a common structure. It can answer institution-level questions about enrolment, entering averages, first-year fees, class size, degrees awarded, and selected graduation or employment outcomes. It usually cannot answer whether one particular program, specialization, course section, or student will have the same result.
Use this six-part check before putting a CUDO number in the matrix:
- Name the measure exactly. “Employment rate” is not interchangeable with co-op placement rate, earnings, job quality, or employment in the field.
- Match the reporting period. Compare the same year or cohort. CUDO says its data is typically updated in the fall, so a figure may describe students who entered or graduated years earlier.
- Read the definition and population. Record who is included, the time point, and any denominator or suppression note. Do not silently compare differently defined groups.
- Keep the unit honest. An institution-wide class-size or graduation figure is not a program-level promise. Look for an official faculty or program source if that distinction matters.
- Treat entering averages as history. They describe reported past entrants under the stated definition; they are not a guaranteed future cutoff or an admission prediction.
- Write what the number does not establish. This one sentence prevents a clean-looking table from implying more than the source supports.
A defensible comparison row looks like this:

CUDO’s own page notes that the types of data collected have changed over time. If a field disappears or its wording changes, do not splice unlike years into a trend. Save the report date and consult the current CUDO instructions or the university’s institutional-research office when a high-stakes comparison remains unclear.
How to score without fake precision
Weight priorities first. A student might choose:

Score each option only after writing evidence. A weighted matrix clarifies trade-offs; it does not turn subjective judgments into scientific truth.
Public opinion: label the claim
Potentially verifiable
“This program requires a minimum grade to enter second year.” Check the academic calendar.
Context-dependent
“The commute is exhausting.” Calculate it for the student’s home, schedule, and transit reliability.
Anecdotal
“Nobody makes friends there” or “every employer prefers us.” These are broad personal claims. Use them to ask better questions, not to publish a fact.
Marketing claim
“Industry-leading opportunities.” Ask for the structure, eligibility, participation numbers, fees, and evidence.
Visit questions that reveal more
- Show me the first-year timetable for this exact program.
- When do students choose a major or specialization?
- What can prevent progression?
- How many students seek this work option and how is matching done?
- Where are most first-year classes physically located?
- What happens when a student wants to change programs?
- What support exists for commuters after evening classes?
- Which costs are not in the tuition headline?
A respectful current-student outreach template
Start with an official ambassador program, open house, campus tour, recruitment event, or recognized student organization when one exists. OUAC recommends visits, open houses, campus visits, and virtual tours as ways to assess fit; the university remains the owner of its current rules.
Hi—I'm comparing [exact program and campus] for [entry term]. I found you through [official event, ambassador page, or student group]. If you are comfortable, could I ask four short questions about things you have personally experienced? I am especially trying to understand [first-year workload / commuting / changing majors / co-op search / support]. No worries at all if you are busy, and please do not share anything private.
Good follow-up questions are bounded:
- In your most recent term, what did a normal week actually look like?
- Which published program rule surprised you once you arrived?
- What support did you personally try, and what happened?
- What do you wish you had checked officially before accepting?
Do not ask a student to predict admission, disclose grades or health information, identify another person, or settle a policy dispute. Ask more than one person, note their program, campus, year, and context, and label every answer as experience rather than representative data. Verify prerequisites, fees, progression, co-op rules, and deadlines with the responsible university office. A polite request permits no reply; it does not create an obligation.
The decision memo
Before accepting, the student should write one page:
- why this exact program fits;
- the largest downside;
- the realistic cost plan;
- the progression or co-op risk;
- the backup if interests change;
- the evidence still uncertain;
- why the trade-off is acceptable.
If the memo says only “reputation” or “vibe,” research is unfinished.
Which Ontario university is best?
There is no context-free answer. The useful question identifies the exact program, learner, finances, campus, career or further-study goals, and daily-life constraints.
Are Reddit university reviews credible?
They can be credible descriptions of an individual experience, but they are not automatically representative. Verify factual claims officially and seek multiple, specific perspectives.
