The Ontario Secondary School Diploma is not based on one final Grade 12 exam. It is earned by completing a set of credit and non-credit requirements.
Ontario’s public summary currently identifies four longstanding pieces:
- 30 secondary-school credits, divided into compulsory and optional credits
- the secondary-school literacy requirement
- at least 40 hours of community involvement
- the applicable online learning graduation requirement, with opt-out rules and cohort details
For students who entered Grade 9 in 2025–26 or later, Ontario has also introduced a cohort-specific financial-literacy graduation requirement completed through modules in the compulsory Grade 10 Career Studies course. The cohort, transcript, attempt, mark, and exception rules need to be checked separately; an older four-item infographic will not show them.
The exact compulsory-credit pattern can depend on when a student began Grade 9 because Ontario has introduced curriculum and graduation changes over time. Use the province’s live checklist and the student’s official status sheet rather than relying on an old infographic.
The six records to request
Ask guidance for:
- The student’s current credit counselling summary or graduation status report
- The Ontario Student Transcript record
- The list of courses in progress
- The recorded community-involvement hours
- The status of literacy and online-learning requirements
- The financial-literacy requirement status, if it applies to the student’s cohort
Compare these documents with the student’s planned postsecondary prerequisites. Graduating and qualifying for a specific university or college program are separate questions.
Credits: completed, in progress, and still needed
Create three lists:

A Grade 12 student can have enough total credits but still be missing a specific compulsory credit. The reverse can also occur: compulsory categories may be complete while total credits are short.
Literacy requirement
Ontario provides more than one route under defined rules, including the provincial literacy test and, for eligible students, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course. Eligibility and accommodations should be discussed with the school. Do not assume that taking a regular English credit automatically satisfies the separate literacy requirement.
Community involvement
Ontario requires at least 40 hours. The province publishes eligible and ineligible activity guidance, but boards can have additional procedures and forms. Get approval before beginning an unusual placement and submit documentation before the school’s internal deadline.
Online learning requirement
Ontario generally describes a two-credit online-learning graduation requirement for affected cohorts, along with an opt-out process. There are exceptions and implementation details. Ask the school to confirm:
- whether the requirement applies to this student’s cohort
- which completed credits count
- whether an opt-out has been recorded
- whether a planned course is approved for the requirement
“I took a class on Zoom” and “this credit counts toward the online-learning graduation requirement” are not automatically the same statement.
Financial-literacy requirement for newer cohorts
Beginning in 2026–27, students who entered Grade 9 in 2025–26 or later normally complete financial-literacy modules in Grade 10 Career Studies. Ontario’s published framework allows up to two attempts, requires at least 70%, makes the highest attempt 5% of the course mark, and records completion on the Ontario Student Transcript. Exceptions and equivalency rules exist, including for some students who enter Ontario later. Ask guidance which rule applies to the individual student rather than inferring it from age or grade alone.
Diploma requirements are not admission requirements
An OSSD can be complete without MHF4U, MCV4U, or another program prerequisite. University and college programs evaluate specific course codes, levels, grades, supplementary applications, and other requirements.
Build two checklists side by side:
- Graduation: What does the school say is still required for the OSSD?
- Destination: What does each program’s current official page require?
A 15-minute guidance meeting agenda
- Am I currently on track for all OSSD requirements?
- Which requirement, if any, is still missing?
- Do my planned courses satisfy each target program’s prerequisites?
- Are community hours and literacy status recorded?
- Does the online-learning requirement apply, and what is my status?
- Does the financial-literacy requirement apply to my cohort, and is its status recorded?
- If a course is not completed, what are the approved recovery options and deadlines?
Ask for the answer in writing or take notes. Course planning becomes much calmer when the status is visible.
Do I need six Grade 12 U or M courses to graduate?
Not as a general OSSD rule. “Six 4U/M courses” is commonly associated with Ontario university admission calculations, not the basic diploma itself. A particular program may have additional prerequisite and average rules.
What happens if my community hours are incomplete?
The diploma requirement remains incomplete until the required eligible hours and documentation are accepted. Contact guidance immediately; do not assume hours can be submitted after every internal graduation deadline.
Can an IEP change diploma requirements?
An IEP can document accommodations, modified expectations, and services, but diploma-credit decisions depend on the courses and expectations successfully completed. Ask the school how the student’s program leads toward an OSSD, certificate, or another outcome.
