A math test asks you to retrieve ideas, choose methods, and carry them out under constraints. Your preparation should rehearse those same actions.
Seven days before: build the test map
Gather the teacher’s outline, unit headings, homework, quizzes, and review material. Create a one-page map with three columns:

“I understand it” is not evidence. A completed question, explanation, diagram, or retrieval attempt is evidence.
Days 6–5: repair the weakest prerequisite
Choose the gap that blocks the most other questions. Review one explanation, rebuild a worked example, then complete a short set. Keep current strengths alive with one or two retrieval questions at the end.
Do not spend the whole week perfecting the first topic. Use a fixed block, then rotate.
Days 4–3: mix and space
Combine question types. Before calculating, label the method and the clue that suggested it. This is where you discover whether you know the mathematics or only recognize a worksheet pattern.
Return to yesterday’s difficult questions without looking at the corrections. That spaced second attempt matters more than rereading the solution.
Day 2: simulate, then investigate
Complete a short practice test with realistic tools and timing. Mark every question with one of these codes:
- K — knowledge or definition was missing
- M — wrong method selected
- P — procedure broke down
- A — arithmetic or algebra error
- C — communication, notation, or missing conclusion
- T — time management
Your correction session should target the cause. Doing five more questions will not fix a habit of failing to read what the variable represents.
Day 1: consolidate, do not flood
Complete a small mixed set, review the error log, prepare allowed materials, and stop at a reasonable time. The aim is to arrive able to think, not exhausted from one final attempt to see everything.
If you create a formula sheet, write when each formula applies and what every symbol means. Even if the sheet is not allowed in the test, constructing it is useful retrieval.
During the test
- Scan the whole test and note the point values.
- Begin with a question you can enter confidently.
- Write the setup before doing mental calculation.
- If stuck, record known quantities, a diagram, or a relevant formula so you preserve reasoning and possible partial credit.
- Mark the question and move before one problem consumes the test.
- Use the final minutes to check signs, restrictions, units, and whether the answer is reasonable.
After the test
When the test is returned, identify the first error in each solution. Redo the question from a blank page and keep one representative item for later review. A returned test is a high-quality diagnostic, not just a grade report.
Is doing the teacher’s review enough?
It is a strong starting point, especially because it signals scope and style. Add at least one no-notes mixed attempt and revisit earlier errors. A review package completed while checking notes after every line may overstate readiness.
What should I do if I have only one night?
Triage. Identify the highest-value skills, attempt representative questions, repair one or two blocking gaps, and sleep. Do not pretend you can compress a month of spaced learning into a night. Your goal is to make the remaining hours produce clear evidence, not panic-driven page turning.
Should I memorize every formula?
Memorize what the course expects, but also learn each formula’s conditions, symbols, and meaning. A recalled formula is not useful if you cannot recognize when it applies or interpret the result.
