Generative AI has made fluent explanations, code, worked solutions, summaries, and drafts available instantly. The central educational problem is no longer access to an answer. It is proving that understanding, judgment, and skill belong to the learner.

What can improve

AI can provide another explanation, generate practice at a chosen level, translate vocabulary, give immediate low-stakes feedback, simulate questions, and support accessibility. A 2025 randomized controlled study published in Scientific Reports found positive learning and engagement results from a carefully designed AI tutor in a specific higher-education setting. That is evidence for designed use—not proof that any chatbot improves any course.

What can get worse

Students can outsource the exact thinking they need to practise. AI can state false facts confidently, mishandle notation, invent sources, expose private data, reinforce bias, or produce work that violates course rules. Fast completion can feel like learning while leaving no retrievable knowledge.

Better assessment design

Educators increasingly need a mix of supervised work, oral explanation, process evidence, drafts, personalized tasks, authentic projects, and clear permitted-use rules. The goal is not surveillance for its own sake. It is valid evidence that the assessed student can do the claimed work.

Better student use

Use AI after an attempt. Ask for a hint, counterexample, diagnostic question, or critique. Close the tool and reproduce the reasoning. Verify with course notes, official sources, calculations, or a teacher. Keep a record of AI assistance when required.

Parents should ask process questions

Instead of “Did AI do this?”, ask the student to explain one decision, solve a parallel problem, identify an error, and say what the tool contributed. That turns enforcement into evidence.

Is all AI use cheating?

No. The course, assessment, and institution define permitted use. Using AI against the stated rules or presenting generated work as independent work can be academic misconduct.

Can AI replace tutoring?

It can provide practice and explanations, but it does not reliably diagnose every misconception, protect privacy, read emotion, know local assessment, or take professional responsibility. Human support and well-designed tools can complement each other.

Should schools ban AI completely?

Schools need age-appropriate, task-specific policies. Some assessments should be AI-free; other learning can explicitly teach responsible use. A universal answer ignores purpose and evidence.
