Why Grade 11 appears in the conversation
Students apply while Grade 12 is still in progress. At an early review point, a university may not yet have a complete set of Grade 12 prerequisite and elective marks. Institutions explain their own use of Grade 11, interim, midterm, projected, or completed results.
This creates two bad internet claims:
- “Grade 11 marks never matter.” They can matter for early assessment and course preparation.
- “One bad Grade 11 mark ruins admission.” Later Grade 12 evidence and program-specific review may still matter.
Use the university’s published offer policy rather than either slogan.
What the current five-school sources say

What “top six” usually means—and what it does not
Many Ontario programs discuss an admission average based on six Grade 12 U/M courses. But the calculation is not simply “pick the six highest marks” in every case.
Check:
- required prerequisite courses that must be included;
- acceptable course types;
- treatment of repeated courses;
- treatment of courses outside the regular day school;
- supplementary application or non-academic assessment;
- minimum grade in a specific prerequisite;
- whether the published range is historical, estimated, or a guaranteed threshold;
- English-language requirements or applicant-category rules.
Early offer does not mean “better student”
Offer timing can reflect available grades, application completeness, program review schedule, capacity, applicant category, and institutional process. Two equally strong applicants can hear at different times.
An early offer is still real, but it usually carries conditions. A later offer is not a lesser degree.
No early offer is not a rejection
Ontario universities continue reviewing applications through the cycle. Read the current OUAC key dates and any program-specific timeline. Do not interpret silence in one month using a friend’s offer from another institution.
Build the student’s own calculator
Create one row per program:

Use an estimate to plan—not to claim admission certainty. Cutoffs move with the applicant pool and capacity.
What to do with a weak Grade 11 mark
- Check whether the Grade 12 successor is still accessible.
- Repair the underlying prerequisite skill.
- Protect current Grade 12 work.
- Research the program’s actual review policy.
- Keep a balanced application list.
- Avoid taking an unnecessary course repeat solely because a forum user said to.
At McMaster, a weak Grade 11 result is not part of general admission review because McMaster says it does not use Grade 11 marks, apart from the stated Midwifery exception. At a university that does use Grade 11 for an early round, the practical consequence may be waiting for stronger Grade 12 evidence—not permanent rejection.

Can I be accepted before all Grade 12 courses are finished?
Yes, universities can make conditional offers using the academic information available under their policies. The offer letter states what must still be completed.
Is an admission range a cutoff?
Not necessarily. OUInfo and institutions explain their ranges and requirements. A range may describe previous or expected competitiveness rather than a guaranteed boundary.
