Precise definition
A mathematical mistake is useful evidence only after it is localized to the first invalid step or missing justification. Classifications include prerequisite gap, concept confusion, method-selection error, notation/reading error, execution slip, and verification failure. Different causes require different repairs.
Notation and mathematical language
An error log should record the prompt, original attempt, first invalid line, governing rule and conditions, corrected solution, and a new transfer problem. Retrieval practice means solving without the model answer visible; spaced practice revisits the skill after increasing delays.
Conceptual picture
Correcting the final number can conceal the cause. Reconstructing the reasoning strengthens discrimination: when does this method apply, and what near-looking problem requires another method? A nonexample is often as valuable as another routine example.
