Precise definition

Ontario Grade 5 mathematics is governed by the province's 2020 elementary mathematics curriculum. The recurring strands are A: social-emotional learning skills and mathematical processes; B: number; C: algebra; D: data; E: spatial sense; and F: financial literacy. Strand A is developed through the content strands rather than treated as a detached checklist.

Notation and mathematical language

Grade 5 work uses whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, equations, patterns, coding, data displays, probability language, measurement, geometry, and money. Notation must carry units and comparison symbols accurately. A fraction $a/b$ requires $b\ne0$, and equality means equal value, not identical appearance.

Fully worked example

Interpretation and application

Grade 5 mathematics supports budgeting, measurement, data literacy, and later proportional and algebraic reasoning. A correct answer should include context: 150 pages, not the bare number 150. A data pattern can show association but does not by itself establish why the pattern occurred.
