Precise definition

MHF4U, Advanced Functions, is Ontario's Grade 12 university-preparation course focused on polynomial, rational, logarithmic, exponential, and trigonometric functions; rates of change; combining functions; and the algebraic and graphical reasoning used in many postsecondary STEM, business, and quantitative programs.

Notation and mathematical language

Under the published curriculum, MCR3U Functions or MCT4C Mathematics for College Technology is the usual prerequisite route; students must confirm the current school rule. Domain, range, inverses, composition, transformations, identities, exact values, and solution sets require restrictions and appropriate units.

Interpretation and application

MHF4U supports calculus, economics, computing, science, and mathematical modelling. Equations may be exact, while empirical exponential or sinusoidal models are approximate and do not establish causation from fit.
