What Is Calculus

A rigorous, example-driven guide to what is calculus, including hypotheses, method choice, verification, and practice.

The central idea

Calculus studies change and accumulation through limits. Differential calculus uses derivatives to measure instantaneous rates and local linear behavior. Integral calculus uses definite integrals to measure accumulated quantities. The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus connects them: accumulating a rate and differentiating the total are inverse operations.

Definitions, hypotheses, and notation

A derivative and an integral answer different but complementary questions. The derivative compresses nearby behavior into a local rate at one input. The definite integral combines values across an interval into a total. Neither is merely a formula: each is defined by a limit that controls approximation error as secant gaps or partition widths shrink.

Modeling requires choosing which mathematical object matches the question. Velocity is the derivative of position; displacement is the integral of velocity; total distance integrates speed instead. The Fundamental Theorem explains the inverse relationship, while domain, continuity, and units determine whether a particular application of that relationship is valid.

Conceptual meaning

Algebra relates fixed quantities; calculus analyzes processes whose quantities vary. A limit makes 'arbitrarily close' precise, allowing a tangent slope to emerge from secant slopes and an exact area to emerge from finite rectangle sums.

A dependable method and decision rule

  1. Identify whether the problem asks about local change, total accumulation, or limiting behavior.
  2. Name the input, output, units, and domain.
  3. Represent change with a difference quotient or accumulation with a sum.
  4. Use a limit to pass from finite approximations to the calculus quantity.
  5. Interpret the result in the original setting and check units and scale.
